Thomas Lee Bland was born December 17, 1881, in Pitt County, North Carolina. Bland was a hotel proprietor and businessman in Rocky Mount and Durham. During World War I, he served as the director of the United States Public Service Reserve for North Carolina. Bland died on October 21, 1939, in Durham, where he was the manager of the Washington Duke Hotel.
