James Green was born in Bath County, North Carolina in about 1705 and became a prominent citizen in colonial New Bern. There, he served as a justice for Craven County in 1754 and later advocated for the establishment of a free school in 1764. He served as store keeper for the North Carolina militia following the Battle of Alamance. He died in 1788.
