Hunter Gilliland Smith was born on March 28, 1870, in Appomattox, Virginia. Smith was a shoe salesman for Craddock Shoe Company in Fayetteville, North Carolina, who served as the chairman of the Cumberland County Committee on Employment during World War I. He died in Fayetteville (Cumberland County) on September 18, 1958.
