Leonard Wood was born on October 6, 1860, in Winchester, New Hampshire. Wood was a lifelong military officer who held the following high-ranking positions: Governor-General of Cuba (1899-1902), Governor of Moro Province (1903-1906), Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1910-1914), and Governor-General of the Philippines (1921-1927). During World War I, he commanded the Southeastern Department and oversaw the selection of sites for several large army cantonments, including Camp Greene outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. Wood died in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 7, 1927.
