On this 8th day of April One thousand Eight hundred and forty four, 1844 personally appeared before me Daniel Carter, one of the acting Magistrates and a member of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in and for said County (It being a Court of Record) Ruth Edwards, a resident of the County and State aforesaid aged ninety two 92 years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 4th 1836.

That she is the widow of John Edwards late pensioner deceased of Washington County Tennessee who was a Sergeant in the Maryland Cont. Line in the War of the Revolution, and was allowed a pension as such at the rate of Seventy seven, 77, dollars and fifty centers per annum

She further declared that she was married to the said John Edwards in Bedford County Virginia in the Spring of the year Seventeen hundred and Seventy, 1770, that her husband the aforesaid John Edwards died on the sixteenth 16, day of October Eighteen hundred and thirty three, 1833, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by refference to the proof hereto annexed.

She also declared that she has no Family Record shewing Either the date of her marriage or the births of her Children.

I do hereby Certify that Ruth Edwards who hath this day swore to and subscribed the foregoing declaration before me, is a person to whose statements is due full faith and credit.

I also Certify that she is by reason of old age and bodily infirmity unable to attend Court to make her said declaration.

And I further Certify that She is the widow of John Edwards late pensioner deceased of Washington County Tennessee. Given under my hand this 8th of April 1844

Spring Term 1844—

I J W Garland Clerk of the Court of pleas & quarter sessions for said county do hereby certify that the forgoing Declaration of Ruth Edwards applicant for a Pension was this day laid before the court examined & approved by Said Court

It was also shown in evidence to the satisfaction of said Court that Ruth Edwards the aforesaid applicant for a Pension is the widow of John Edwards late deced of Washington County Tennessee, who was a pensioner of the united States at the Rate of seventy seven dollars & fifty centers per annum and died in said county of Washington on the 14th of October 1833 leaving said applicant a widowe

I further Certify that Daniel Carter Esq before whom the foregoing Declaration was proven is & was at the time of Signing the same an acting Magistrate in & for Yancy County, as aforesaid & that the foregoing signatures purporting to be his are genuine—
