Hon. T. W. Bickett,
Governor of N.C.,
Raleigh, N.C.
Dear Governor:-
I am returning the enclosed letter from Elon College in regard to lynching at Graham Aug. 22nd.
I have had Mr. J. B. Gerringer on the witness stand and given him the roughest examination I knew how in order to ascertain who were the criminals but he repeatedly denied knowing any one of them. The same is true of all the officers who were in the posse and a number of citizens who were in a position to see and know. They all absolutely and flatly denied knowing any man that was seen to have anything to do with the lynching. I agree with your correspondent that it was one of the most outrageous performances that has ever taken place in our state and I am anxious to ascertain the the names of the parties who did it and bring them to trial.
With highest regards, I am,
Yours very truly,
The letter will be held confidential.
