They generally appeared on the streets with cocked pistols in their hands. A squad of them were sent up in town by Col. Kirk, in charge of a Lieutenant, for the purpose of bringing before him one of our most respected citizens. On their return with said citizen they passed by the Mansion House, a hotel kept by Rowzee & White, both as good and law abiding citizens as can be found any where. When the Lieutenant, who was marching at the head of the squad, was just opposite the dining room he fired one of the two pistols, which he held cocked in his hands, into the pavement immediately under the dining room window. A number of his men, who were a few yards behind him, immediately raised a shout that they had been fired at from the hotel window. Six or seven of them rushed to the window and leveled their muskets at the guests of the hotel, who were at supper at the time, exploding several caps at them. The consternation among the guests at the table, a number of whom were women and children, can be better imagined than described. The Lieutenant in command took no notice of their conduct, except to turn around a moment or two after the firing and exclaim to his men: "What are you firing for? Did'nt I tell you not to shoot without my orders?" Several citizens, who were standing immediately by, said simultaneously : "You fired the shot yourself, we saw you do it." To this he made no reply but marched on.

These are the simple facts of the transaction as they have been detailed to us by several eye witnesses in whom we have every confidence—we were not in town at the time. Will Governor Holden justify such conduct as this, and much more of the same sort that occurred here and here and other places on their way here? Will he cause steps to be taken to have these offenders brought to justice? Will he allow the men whom he to become themselves the open violators of the law? We have detailed the facts as they can be proven by a number of eye witnesses, that he may know them and cause the perpetrators to be dealt with as they deserve to be for their conduct.
