June 28th 1916
Hon. H. L. Godwin, M.C.,
Washington, D.C.
My Dear Congressman:-
I wish to ask you to write me a nice personal letter to Gov. Locke Craig, asking him to appoint me to the position of Surgeon to the Second Regiment, N.C. State Guards. Please do this and mail direct to the Gov. at once.
You might mention the fact, that I have always desired to serve as Surgeon to the army, and did all I could to get into the Service during the Spanish American War. He might view this like Gideon did the three hundred soldiers who scooped up water with their hands but drank it as they marched, and never missed a step. Gideon seemed to think that the most anxious for the fray were the most dependable Soldiers.
I was in Fayetteville two days this week, and interviewed both your enemies and your friends. I learned from the court house crowd, Sheriff Gaster being the spokesman, that Brown's only hope is that your friends will not come to the primary Saturday, and his (Brown's) will. Gaster told me frankly that this was their only hope. I came home and at once saw Robt. L. and G.K.G. They left yesterday on a tour of the district, which, Mr. Cook and Mr. Robinson (of Fayetteville) think will do much good.
Well, I am to go to Camp Glenn Friday night, as guest of the Second Regiment, but as this would prevent me from helping you in the primary Saturday, I shall defer going till Saturday night. I can vote for you myself, and may be able to influence a few votes on the outside.
I realize that this is, perhaps, the turning point in your career. If you get by the opposition this time, you [need?] have no fears for the future.
Excuse this long letter. I know you are too busy to read it, but it is the first time I ever wrote any Congressman, and I wanted to say what I have and even more, but will not tax your patience further this time.
Yours Sincerely,
O. L. Denning, M.D.
Enclosed in: 1916, July 7. Godwin to Craig.
