His Excellency,
Gov. Locke Craig,
Raleigh, N.C.
Dear Governor:
Your letter, inclosing appointment as one of the Park Commissioners for Mt. Mitchell reservation, received. I thank you very kindly for having placed upon me this honor and I beg to assure you that I appreciate it as an honor and will undertake to discharge my duty in a manner which will reflect credit on myself and demonstrate my patriotism to the State.
Will it be too much to ask of you your opinion as to about how much land we ought to purchase? It is my opinion that we ought not to undertake to purchase less than 1,000 acres and I do not believe that we ought to agree to pay more than from $6 to $10 per acre for these lands. If you will kindly indicate to your ideas about the matter I will not only appreciate it very keenly, but will undertake, in my feeble way, to carry them out.
Yours very truly,
EFW:JBL
