George Nichols a Soldier belonging to the Garrison of Fort Johnston on Cape Fear River being of full age and duely sworn on the holy Evangelists of Almighty God deposeth and saith that he this Deponent well knows Captain John Dalrymple sometime Commander of said Fort. That this Deponent was stationed at Fort Johnston when Captn. Dalrymple was ordered to the said Fort under an Arrest from His Excellency Governor Dobbs which was in or about the Month of August 1762—That during the time he was under such Arrest he frequently chose to bring before him and examined and swore several Masters of Vessells touching the health of their Crew in the same Manner as the Governor of the said Fort is directed to do and demanded & took the fees allowed for such Service and detained a Sword belonging to an Officer of the Company stationed there to answer for some fees which such Officer had taken from some Masters of Vessels That the said Captain Dalrymple some time after his being at Fort Johnston was ordered to a room and a Centry placed Before it that he twice came out of such room notwithstanding the Remonstrances of the Centry—and that being afterwards ordered out of the Fort the said Captain Dalrymple at first refused and snapped a pistol at the Commanding Officer who required him to leave the Fort. And further this Deponent saith not.
