New York 14th. February 1759.
Sir
Four days ago, I received your Letter of the 16th. December last, Acquainting me that His Majesty having been graciously pleased to give by Address of Parliament, to the Three Provinces of North & South Carolina & Virginia, the Sum of £50,000 Now lodged in the Treasury, to be distributed to them, but which cannot be received untill the Commander in Chief make a proportional dividend among those Provinces; And as you had been informed, that the Government of Virginia have applyed to me for half that Sum, as their proportion, if I did agreed to it, you think you have a just right to expect £15000 as a proper proportion for the Poor Colony of North Carolina, which has distinguished it's Zeal in promoting His Majestys Service, even beyond their Abilities, considering the poverty of its Inhabitants, who are all late Settlers.
In Answer thereto I am to inform you, that neither me nor, by what I can learn, my predecessors, have ever received any directions from home to make Such a dividend but you may be Assured that, whenever I do I Shall give You immediate Notice of it. And Shall pay a due regard to the Zeal of the Colony of North Carolina for His Majesty's Service which I hope they will always continue to Exert. Meanwhile, I Should think that You and the other Governments who are to partake of this Royal Bounty, Should lay Your Claims before the Kings Ministers, in Order to enable them to guide me in an Affair to which at present I am an utter Stranger.
I am Sir &c.
