New Bern 8 Jany. 1758
Sir,
I had your Excellency's favour by Maj. Salickens and am glad to hear that all things go well between your Province and the Indians, which with the Regulars you have with you will make you easy from any Attempt from Mobile, this Assembly having only given a Supply for 3 Companies of 50 Men each, as they apprehended you wou'd not now want the Assistance of our small Supply, since the Virginians were recalled, and you had not proper Quarters for more than the Numbers you have now with you, however since there is no fort yet ready at the Cataubas, I have recalled a Company from the Westward and will fix 2 Companies to defend our forts on the Sea Coast, and if they shou'd be wanted, they shall be sent to you on the first Notice
Mr. Atkins is just getting out of a fit of the Gout, who I hope will carry this to you, we have regulated the post from Wilmington to Virginia, when I can judge where our Letters arrive at Wilmington, I will let you know what days your post shoud arrive there—We have divided our post into several Stages, and if your Stage can be divided into 2 Stages, one to George Town on Winyaw, and then another to go from thence to Wilmington, it might be more regular and at less Expence as many more Letters woud pass if the Times were regular.
I have had no Letters from the Northward since I wrote to you. I wish you a happy Agreement with your Assembly and peace in your Government, and am with great Esteem and Truth
Sir
your Excellency's
most obedient & most
humble Servant
Arthur Dobbs
