I interpret Germany’s reply as an unconditional surrender to the terms of peace repeatedly and consistently prescribed by President Wilson and repeatedly and emphatically endorsed by our Allies. The reply is a humiliating confession on the part of Germany that militarism is a gigantic and bloody failure and has been beaten to dust. This unconditional surrender to our terms of peace secures to the world all that the Allies are fighting for and is glorious fruitage of the blood of our slain. The President of the United States has a truer insight into and a more comprehensive grasp of the real situation than any living man, and I have the faith of Abraham that he will deal with the vast and vital issues involved in a way that will satisfy the conscience and gladden the heart of the world.
