My dear Sir:
In compliance with your letter of June 18th I recommend for appointment as members of the Federal District Boards, which will pass on the question of exemption under the Selective Service Law, the following persons:
WESTERN DISTRICT
(Board No. 1.)
Labor Rep. --- O. R. Jarrett, of Asheville. Former President of State Federation of Labor, and a patriotic, intelligent citizen.
Farmer --- W. B. Gibson, of Statesville. An intelligent, patriotic farmer. Chairman of Executive Committee of the State Farmers’ Union.
Lawyer --- R. B. Radwine, of Monroe. Lawyer of ability, character and patriotism. He is also largely interested in the farming situation, being himself the owner of a large farm.
Business man - W. N. Reynolds, of Winston-Salem. Vice-president of and large stockholder in the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He is also a progressive farmer, and runs a model dairy farm.
Physician --- Dr. John Wesley Long, of Greensboro. A patriotic, intelligent citizen, and one of the leading physicians of North Carolina.
EASTERN DISTRICT
(Board No. 2.)
Labor Rep. --- E. R. Pace, of Raleigh. Prominent in labor organizations. Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Raleigh, and endorsed by the American Federation of Labor.
Farmer --- Graham McKinnon, of Rowland. He is a large farmer. Intelligent and patriotic, and can be depended on to do his duty fearlessly.
Lawyer --- John D. Langston, of Goldsboro. An able, honest and patriotic lawyer.
Business man - C. D. Bradham, of New Bern. Large wholesale and retail druggist. Vice-President, People’s Bank of New Bern, President of the Pepsi-Cola Company. Has large farming interests. Honest, intelligent and patriotic.
Physician --- Dr. Chas. O’H. Laughinghouse, of Greenville. He is President of the North Carolina Medical Association. Energetic, courageous, patriotic. An ideal man for the job.
I recommend these men for this important service because I am satisfied that every one of them is a patriotic and loyal citizen, and will do his duty without fear and without favor.
