NORTH CAROLINA FOOD CONSERVATION COMMISSION

RALEIGH, N.C.

<Letter to Members of Ex. Committee of Sub Food Conservation Commissions>

Dear Sir:

In mapping out its campaign for increased production of feed and food crops in North Carolina, the State Food Conservation Commission has decided that the most effective factor in this campaign will be the work of a Sub Food Conservation Commission in each county. We decided to ask the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, the Superintendent of Education, the County Farm Demonstration Agent and the Home Demonstration Agent in each county to form the nucleus for the County Commission, these persons to select three additional citizens, who, with them, will form the Executive Committee of seven. These seven will appoint one person from each school district of the County, the aggregate of whom, with themselves, will form the Commission.

Governor Bickett has been slightly indisposed for a day or so, and I am not sure that your commission has been forwarded yet. However, I am writing to request that you with the others appointed, or to be appointed by the Governor, meet at once, select the remainder of the Executive Committee of seven and immediately choose the representative on the Commission from each school district as outlined above. These representatives may be men or women.

I desire to impress upon you very strongly the necessity of selecting people who can and will work and get results, both as members of the Executive Committee and of the Commission as a whole. This is very important.

Your selection for this work is an honor, but it is more than that: It is a call to service. The work in hand is of tremendous and immediate importance. The season is getting late already, and what is done must be done immediately. Do not wait to receive your commission from the Governor. I am notifying you of your appointment and on behalf of the Governor and the Commission am requesting you to complete the organization of your County Food Conservation Commission without delay.

I suggest that you complete the organization of your Executive Committee of seven on or before Thursday the 26th, and at that time select the representatives from the school districts of the County. Elect from your number a chairman and secretary. As the County Demonstration Agent is the most active man in his field, we are recommending that he be made Secretary in the counties that have agents. Fix an hour for a full meeting of the Commission on Friday or Saturday and at that time outline the work in your County insofar as you are able. In all probability I shall be able to offer further suggestions by that date.

For your information, and to impress upon you the gravity of the situation, I am enclosing a copy of a statement which I have sent to all of the newspapers of the State, and which you have possibly already seen. There are no overdrawn statements in that article. They are absolute facts and figures, and should impress every one of us with the vital importance of increasing our food and feed production to the largest extent possible by whatever means we may most effectively use.

Very truly yours,

NORTH CAROLINA FOOD CONSERVATION COMMISSION
By John Paul Lucas
Executive Secretary.
