President,
Rotary Club,
New York, City.
Dear Sir;
There have been a great many inquiries sent to this office in the past months requesting information as to the integrity &c, of the Prisoners Relief Society in general and "Dr" Dudding in particular, who have "supposedly" been e engaged in the welfare work among the inmates of penal institutions throughout the country both during and after confinement.
I have communicated with many different organizations and individuals throughout the U, S. And it is my well founded opinion that, as a press agent and accumulator of cash donations "Dr" Dudding and his staff are among the most successful and competent in the U. S. A.
But, as a dispenser of practical or financial assistance to incarcerated or released prisoners they are conservative to the point of nillity.
Enclosed you will find a copy of the "Dudding Resolution" passed by the Wardens Association assembled at the last Prison Congress,
It is high time that a stop was put to this fellows licentious activities.
We, the inmates of penal institutions are the bate he is using to have a gullable public enrich his undeserving and non-productive coffers, and we protest, to your organization and all others whom he has ever approached.
In all the years Dudding has operated he has never assisted one man among all the thousands that have been confined herein in any way shape or manner.
He has made one visit to this prison. One of the largest in population in the entire U.S.A. On that occasion he "held interviews" and promised every man that he would fulfill their particular request. NOT one of these promises ever materialized.
There are one thousand one hundred and eighty men serving from one year to natural life in this prison, and among them are the "Ex-Cons" from practically every prison in the U.S. not one of them has ever been assisted in any way or is aware of anyone else ever having been assisted by the Dudding outfit.
His involuntary report, covering six years of activity, states that $10,000 was used in cash gifts board and lodging and equipment, out of $5,000 dispursed, the balance being used for saleries postage, publicity and etc, By his own statements therefore it is shown that but 22% was expended for the direct benefit of the men, in whoes behalf the entire amount was obtained.
Candidly, our opinion is that the results obtained does not justify the existance of the "Dr" Dudding Society.
However, our Motto is "DO GOOD; MAKE GOOD; and our policy; IF RIGHT TO BE KEPT RIGHT; If WRONG TO BE SET RIGHT".
And we are open to conviction as to Duddings worth. If you have any facts in his favor, would you kindly send them to us, as well as any other information you may have.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Mr Pulitzer of the World; also a copy to "Dr" Dudding. only I am asking Dudding to accompany any statistics or statements he makes with a Notary's Affidavid, as to verasity (which if false is a felony) that is to the point and fair play.
It is just such outfits that leave a bad taste in the public palate, regarding all Prison Workers, and the sincere stable organizations such as, The Volunteers of America, The Salvation Army, The Prison Association, and the Welfare League Association. Organizations which assist thousand of men in practical material ways, living up to their principles of service and help. Coming to the prisons looking for cases needing assistance, then giving it, making life in prison a little better, more cheerful place in which to live, Preventing many, many men, from loosing hope accompanied by unspeakable things. Organizations that have changed American Prisons from the spirit killing- breeding places of revenge, anarchism and hatred which they once were, to places where good morals are an asset, and honor a virtue, causing men to go forth better and stronger, morally, mentally and physically than they weere when committed.
Hoping to hear from you, we are
THE MUTUAL WELFARE LEAGUE.
Secretary.
