Governor Craig was asked for an interview by a Citizen reporter last night stating what he had to say as to the lynching at Goldsboro yesterday. "I am surprised and grieved at this crime," he said. "Two murders have been committed in Wayne county, one by the highwayman and one by the mob." The last was no alleviation of the first. The killing of Mr. Gurley was a foul assassination. It was calculated to enrage the community and to excite the people. But there was no reason for this lynching. I do not believe that public opinion in this state will condone it for a moment. There was no necessity for it. It is known that our courts of justice enforce the law in such cases. And it is known too that such criminals do not escape the judgment of the law when they come before me. If this negro was guilty, and it seems clear that he was, he should have been executed, and his execution would have had a salutary effect.

"These criminals who have trampled down the law in Wayne county will be prosecuted. I certainly will exert what power I have to bring them to justice.

"Several days ago I heard of the killing of Mr. Gurley. I have heard nothing of any apprehension of a lynching until yesterday afternoon. The crime committed by this mob is a reflection on the state. It is deplored by every good citizen. The people ought to make it known that such savagery will not be tolerated, especially when it is altogether unnecessary."
