Mr. Fairfax Harrison,
Washington, D. C.

My dear Mr. Harrison:

Some months ago Judge R. W. Winston of this place at my request saw you in regard to a contribution by the Southern Railway Co. toward the building of a monument on Mitchell's Peak.

Judge Winston informed me that you received the suggestion most courteously, and were of the opinion that the Southern Railway would contribute toward the monument.

I have appointed General Julian S. Carr as Chairman of the Committee to build the monument. He will take charge of the whole matter. I send you a copy of the statement which I have made to the papers, which explains the situation.

It is probable that the monument will cost ten or twenty thousand dollars. I hoped at first to build it for five, but I could get no suitable designs for that amount.

I hope that you will indicate to me what amount the Southern Railway will contribute, I am

With the highest

Yours sincerely,
