Weaver College

Governor Locke Craige,
Raleigh, N.C.

My dear Governor Craige:-

The students and faculty of Weaver College have agreed to build a monument to the memory of Dr. Elisha Mitchell at the summit of Mitchell's Peak. We were to do this work last spring but the weater was so inclement at the time proposed for the task that we thought best to defer the matter until October of this year. Since our offer was made the state of North Carolina has purchased the summit of the mountain and I am writing you to ask if we shall proceed with the work.

Our plans call for an imposing monument of rough mountain boulders with marble trimmings. The state Historical Society will write the inscription and the Regal Marble Co. has agreed to furnish all marble used in the construction of the memorial. We have some generous subscriptions to the work. The Perley, Crockett Co. will co-operate with us.

Please let us know at earliest date what you wish done. If the state has plans the college will be glad to co-operate with your forces. If you have no present plans we shall be glad to proceed with our original ideas.

With all good wishes for your continued success,

I am yours respectfully,
