Hon. Locke Craige,
Asheville, N.C.

Honorable Sir:-

If there is a county in the State that worked harder for you through your two campaigns than Watauga, I would be much pleased to know which one it was. We mourned together over your defeat, and rejoiced as one man when you were victorious. The name of Governor Craig is musical to our people. We fought, and fought hard, were victorious. Now, we want another victory which you are in a position to help us win. As you know, we are in an isolated condition up here so far as rail road facilities are concerned, and just when we thought we were sure to get a road, work has suspended on the W. & Y. R. R. R., and unless you can furnish us some convicts in addition to the small number we already have, we fear that the work will will not be resumed anways soon. Governor, in the name of the great State of North Carolina; for the sake of the best county in the State; and for your many friends here, give us just as many as you can, and let the work progress. The Company expresses itself as ready to resume work as soon as the convicts can be had, and push the road on to Boone. We have stood by you, now we plead that you stand by us in this hour of great need. Will you do it? Trusting and believing that you will, I beg to remain,

Most respectfully yours,

R. C. Rivers
Editor Watauga Democrat.
