I wrote to you yesterday, but a Schooner having arrived here this morning from Philadelphia in a passage of 3 days which has brought the Philadelphia Paper of the 14th Instant with many articles of news very favourable for us I shall give you a short abstract of them. First from Europe, in the London Gazette Extraordinary of June 30th Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick attacked the french army—tho' only the French left could be engaged on the 23d and entirely defeated them with the Loss of 7 or 8000 french 2 Kettle drums 2 pair of Colours 5 Standards and 8 queues of Cannon the Kings army had between 12 and 1500 Killed and wounded. They took all their Touls and Baggage; The Enemy returned to Neus—The King of Prussia carries on the Siege of Olmutz and covers it with near 80000 men they say the Queen of Hungary has sent to propose Terms of Peace and they say a Cessation's actually agreed on tho' I believe that is premature. Count Daun has in trenched his army, and in England they are so sanguine as to talk of a triple Alliance against French the Prince Royal of Prussia is dead of a feaver the Russians dont yet advance and the Poles are in great Ferment The English Fleet were at La Hague intended to land at Cherburg in Normandy from thence they will go and Land at Embdan, and they talk of immediately sending into Germany the Blue Guards 2 Regements of dragoons the Scotch Greys and the Irish Carolinians and 6 Regaments of foot from Ireland to joyn Prince Ferdinand The most authentick advices from London confirm this and say a Peace with the Queen of Hungary is actually Contended and after 2 other descents on the Coast of France the Duke of Marlborough will land them at Empden. Genl. Blyth was wrote for to go and Command the [Troops]. Prince Ferdinands army was only 32000 and the French 6700—On the 22d of August Sr Charles Handy was getting under sail for the Bay of Gelfe at St Laurence with the Royal William of 84 Guns and 5 of 64 Guns 2 frigates are fine ship and 7 Transports with 3 Regiments on Board under Genl. Wolfe to distress the Enemies Trade 6 Regiments to Embark for Boston—That Coll Monckton with 1900 men were gone to possess St Johns River in the Bay of Fundi That the Inhabitants of St Johns Island were arriving daily to be transported to France with those of Lewisburg pursuant to the Capitulation and Captn. Rouse was gone to destroy the French settlements on newfoundland an Express arrived at Albany and new york with Letters dated at oswego Aug 30th giving an account Capt. Broadstreet had attacked taken and destroyed Fort Frontenac on ontario Lake they had taken about 200 prisoners with the Loss of only of 3 Killed and 17 wounded; they brought away between 80 and 100 Cannon burnt 5 of their vessels and levelled the Fort to the ground and destroyed 2000 Barrels with Provisions the officer who commanded was 3d in Commission in Canada who is to be released for Coll: Schuler Captn Broadstreet was gone on another Expedition Supposed to Fort LaGalette within 17 miles of Monreal. But as he had near 3000 men with him and Cannon with the vessels he had I hope it is Fort Niagara or he will again attack it—I could wish to have given you as good an account from Fort du Quesne but the Paper is silent upon that Article But the Captn says an Express from that Army Came in after the Paper was printed who said Genl. Forbes who had been ill was Recoverd and that the Troops with all the waggens were got over the Laurel Hills and were within 40 Miles of Fort Du Quesne—
