The District Exemption Board,
Statesville, N.C.

Gentlemen:

I understand that the local board at Albemarle has classified our physician in charge of the Badin hospital, Dr. W. T. Rainey, in Class A1. I presume his affidavit will be forwarded to Statesville in the regular way but I take this opportunity to advise you of the circumstances why he asks for exemption and why we are anxious that he be exempted.

He has been employed by us practically since we started building the Plant and Town and has had charge of its health and sanitation and has grown with it and in the estimation of all the residents as well as in the estimation of this Company, as he has performed a good work which is just starting. The population of our Town of Badin is now between 5000 and 6000. We have a nice hospital which Dr. W. T. Rainey is in charge of and has four young lady nurses, making his hospital staff. He has had this all from the start and knowing full well the scarcity of physicians, even though he be single with no dependents, we certainly hope the board will give this case most careful consideration as we need the services of this Doctor, who is thoroughly broken in on the needs of our great work here, and we trust you all may see fit to exempt him from military services. He is very necessary for this health work we are doing here and he is the only physician we have in charge of the hospital. We think you will realize the necessity of this case and will very much appreciate the granting of this exemption because this community needs this Doctor very much indeed for the health of the workmen and their families, and the medical attention to our large aluminum works, which metal the plant is making for the government needs.

Thanking you for your consideration and that of the board,

Yours very truly,

Stuart B. Marshall
